Dry cat food oxidizes when left out in the open.

This causes the dry kibble to develop a stale taste and eventually rot.

Proper storage of dry cat food can slow down this oxidizing process and maintain the quality of the kibble.

How do I store dry cat food?

There are several ways to store dry cat food and ensure it remains fresh for longer.

I know one thing, I don’t like leaving out wet food for my cats. It attracts flies, smells if left too long, becomes hard to clean off their bowls, and very obviously goes bad. I do try and leave some dry kibble food out at all times though as they are grazers....

The "Best By" dates of any dry cat food is often 6 months after the production date. And preservatives and antioxidants are supposed to keep it fresh. Unfortunately, even though the original bag is tightly sealed, the preservatives themselves can degrade into a useless compound over time....

Somewhere on the bag there should be a date. Dry cat food "usually" has an expiration date stamped about 8 months to 1 year out. It will get stale after opened. You can pour it into an airtight container to keep it fresher longer....
